#1 Picking A Healthy Diet During Pregnancy And Loving It At The Same Time

April 11, 2010 by Diana Luster

It’s common sense that when you are pregnant, you need to eat as healthily as you possibly can for your baby’s sake. So why do so many women still find it so hard to do this?

If you are struggling, here are a few handy hints to make eating healthily very easy indeed.

To ensure that your baby gets all the essential nutrients that he or she needs, you need to make sure that you take in a good assortment of vegetables, fruits and proteins. Although you may prefer one to the others, having a mix of all three will ensure that your baby isn’t getting plenty of one nutrient and not enough of another.

By keeping a good balance in your diet you will be ensuring that both you and your baby get everything you need in terms of vitamins, whole grains, proteins etc. Don’t miss one out and double up on another one, this will mean that an essential nutrient will be missing.

Don’t even consider dieting when pregnant. You need a constant supply of nutrients and calories through the entire duration of your pregnancy and also post natal.

Even the slimmest of women gain weight during pregnancy; this is your body nurturing your baby, don’t fight it! More and more women are putting the lives of both themselves and their unborn child at risk by trying desperately not to gain any weight.

We all appreciate how difficult it can be at times to find exciting foods to eat while pregnant; especially when you have an aversion to your normal favorites and feel sick at the thought of them. Try experimenting with foods and see what your cravings bring into the mix!

Food should be fun, fact. Just because you are pregnant doesn’t mean you have to miss out on your favorite treats. For the sheer miracle of creating a whole new person to make their way in the world, a nice treat is well deserved.

Constipation Remedies to Alleviate Worry During Pregnancy

March 19, 2010 by Gareth Hanson

Many will see a woman walking around pregnant and offer some kind words. These words will often revolve around her dealing with constipation symptoms due to the pregnancy. While many women do suffer from these symptoms, they can be addresses and alleviated with some common constipation remedies.

Something that can be very troublesome during a pregnancy is hemorrhoids. Nobody ever wants to get them as they can be very painful to go through. While it is a common problem among pregnant women, it is something that is not necessary to go through.

Hemorrhoids are not something that anyone should have to go through, especially an expecting mother. If you have never experienced hemorrhoids or the painful surgery that is associated with getting rid of them, count your blessings because it can be extremely difficult to handle. Trying to go to the bathroom after having surgery may be more painful than having the child.

Any mother that is experiencing problems when trying to go to the bathroom is probably constipated. This is usually something that can be fixed with a better diet, lots of water and exercise. Using a laxative is only a band aid, you want the permanent fix. While we all understand moms gets some interesting cravings, there still needs to be a balance of nutrition mixed in there as well.

Our bodies are very smart. They know when something is amiss and will send out warning signs in the way of discomfort to get us to address the problem. By merely ignoring these signs, they will only get worse and there will be repercussions later on. Hemorrhoids are a hell of a price to pay for stubbornness.

One thing that every mother needs to keep in the back of her mind is that there is still a baby to think about as well. Because of this, talking to the doctor is always advised. If diet changes are not working, they can get you pointed in the right direction very quickly.

Constipation is never something that is enjoyable to experience, but when someone is pregnant it is much worse. Carrying around the extra weight of a child and then adding the bloated feeling to it can be quite a bit for anyone to handle.

Like we said, why suffer when you don’t have to?

How to Beat Fatigue with Nutrition During Pregnancy

March 8, 2010 by Scarlett Ritter

Ask any pregnant lady who is in her first or third trimester how they’re feeling and the answer will almost always be “tired”. One of many of the first clues that several women have that they’ll expect a visit from the stork is the fact that they find themselves exhausted in the center of the day for no reason.

You’ll realize that doing a simple task as walking around the block leaves you craving an afternoon nap. The energy you used to possess is currently faced with the challenge of growing a baby, and your body is hard at work. You’re using additional water and nutrients and have a more rapid heart rate and metabolism when you are pregnant. The best defense against the tiredness you will face is to get additional sleep. There are also some healthy food decisions you can make that can help you get through your day if you do not have the opportunities to take naps.

First, alter the portions of your meals. Anyone who eats a large meal will feel tired afterward whether they’re pregnant or not. Being pregnant is going to make the impact of a huge meal a lot worse. Most of your energy goes towards digesting the meal, so in fact you will feel sluggish and drained. Eat smaller meals and eat more often. Eating six little meals on a daily basis will assist you in fighting fatigue.

Eating a smart breakfast is the best way to start out your day. You are refueling your body after a long night of sleep with a good breakfast. A sensible breakfast isn’t a cup of milk and a slice of toast. You want to stay with complex carbs and protein. Whole grain cereal and a banana with peanut butter, for example. These foods can remain with you and keep your blood sugar and energy level up for quite a while.

Don’t skip lunch. There are many folks who skip lunch thinking they will catch up by having a big dinner. This is unhealthy when you are not pregnant but it’s even worse when you’re pregnant. You have to have that midday meal to assist in refueling your body. The same as with breakfast, you must stick with whole grains and protein. Have whole grain roll and fill it with chicken salad and add a side of grapes or an apple.

Plan to eat most of your calories during the day. A pregnant woman wants an extra three hundred calories daily throughout their second and third trimester. The first trimester those are not required yet. You should eat these additional calories through out the day in the way of healthy snacks like nuts, cheese, veggies and dip. Don’t save your biggest meal till the end of the day. Your body needs these calories to help you get through your day. Avoid the quick sugar fixes like candy and soda.

Lastly, make sure you’re getting enough iron. Eat iron fortified food such as spinach and lean beef to keep your energy up. There are times when extreme fatigue may be the symptom of an iron deficiency and you could possibly require an iron supplement also.

Besides eating well, make certain you get plenty of rest whether or not this implies pushing your bedtime up and giving up those late night TV talk shows. As any parents of newborns will tell you, get your rest while you still can.

The Top 9 Fish Oil Benefits Proven By Clinical Studies

February 10, 2010 by Brittany M. Wallace
Filed under Uncategorized

A great deal of research studies demonstrate that, not only are fish oil benefits numerous, some of them are actually quite extraordinary! It seems like new research is being produced everyday, as scientists and doctors learn so much more about how and why it is so beneficial. The omega-3 fatty acids that are in fish oil are “good fats” that are necessary for well-being. They are crucial for our health but our bodies can’t make them – you must obtain them through diet. Here are some proven fish oil health benefits that should persuade you to eat more oily, wild fish and/or start taking a high quality fish oil supplement if you’re not already!

Promotes Cardiovascular Wellness & Protects Against Heart Attack and Strokes

Fish oil continues to grow in scientific credibility as an important promoter of heart health. According to the American Heart Association, fish oil is effective in lessening the occurrence of heart disease and helps to reduce risk factors such as high cholesterol and high blood pressure. Clinical studies of heart attack survivors have found that daily fish oil supplements drastically minimize the risk of dying, additional heart attacks and stroke. Omega-3s also lower blood triglycerides, help correct irregular heart rhythms, and can help prevent and treat atherosclerosis by preventing the development of plaque and blood clots, which often clog arteries.

Minimizes Pain & Inflammation

Omega-3s have a powerful anti-inflammatory effect. Clinical studies show that diets rich in omega-3s (and low in the inflammatory omega-6s) may help people with inflammation-based conditions — anything that ends in -itis!. Omega-3s have also been used to successfully treat back, neck and menstrual pain, helping study patients to reduce their intake of NSAID medication.

Promotes Healthy Joints and Minimizes Arthritis

The omega-3s in fish oil reduce joint tenderness, pain intensity and morning stiffness produced by rheumatoid arthritis. In fact, many test tube studies have shown that omega-3s actually reduce the activity of enzymes that break down cartilage. At least 13 published scientific trials have shown that omega-3 fatty acids are extremely beneficial at treating rheumatoid arthritis. Fish oil has helped those suffering from RA to reduce their need for pain medicine.

Increases Mental Acuity & Long-Term Cognitive Function

Are you aware that omega-3s, particularly DHA, are highly concentrated in our brains? They’re essential for optimum cognitive (mental memory and performance) and behavioral function, as well as normal growth and development. Studies show that omega-3s may help in maintaining proper cognitive functioning and possibly in avoiding or staving off the onset of dementia. We also have learned that it’s extremely important that pregnant women get enough DHA, because it’s crucial to the growing fetus — in the third trimester of pregnancy, the brain of the fetus grows at a rate of 250,000 new neurons every 60 seconds! Children are also aided by fish oil intake, as myriad studies show that omega-3s improve learning, concentration, vocabulary and reading skills. Countless studies have even shown benefits in treating ADD.

Contributes to Happy Mood & Emotional Wellness

In countries where fish is a significant part of the diet, nationwide rates of depression are lower. So, it shouldn’t be surprising that studies have shown that fish oil supplements can temper the symptoms of depression, bipolar disorder and psychosis. Several studies have shown that those that took omega-3s in addition to prescription anti-depressants had a larger improvement in symptoms than those that only took antidepressants, with patients experiencing a stabilizing effect and less mood swings. Research has also demonstrated that, when those in prison were administered omega-3s, there was a drastic reduction in hostile behavior. Omega-3s also seem to reduce the risk of postnatal depression.

Promotes Vision Wellness

Studies show that people with a greater fish oil consumption appear to have a lower risk of Dry-Eye Syndrome and developing macular degeneration. Early studies also show that omega-3 supplementation helps in alleviating dry eye symptoms, may help to slow macular degeneration for those already developing it and improves ocular health in general.

Pregnancy, Infancy Eye & Brain Development & Less Occurrence of Childhood Disorders

DHA makes up 15-20% of our cerebral cortex and approximately 30-60% of the retina, so it’s absolutely necessary for normal development of the fetus and baby. Prenatal DHA availability also seems to lessen likelihood of childhood allergies and have an effect on motor skill quality, cognitive development and behavior/hyperactivity later in the child’s life. Omega-3s also assist in lowering the risk of low birth weight and premature birth.

Promotes Increased Metabolism of Fat and Weight Loss

According to the National Institute of Health, omega-3s transmit “I’m full” signals to the brain and help quash hunger signals. Research has also shown that fish oil improves the effectiveness of exercise in reducing weight. Volunteers who were alloted fish oil with their diet showed greater weight loss as contrasted with people who did not consume fish oil. Exercise combined with fish oil had a positive effect on the body shape and body composition of the volunteers.

Lowers Chance of Colorectal, Breast & Prostate Cancers

Though more research in this area is certainly needed, we now know that the omega 3’s found in fish oil assist in the prevention and treatment of testicular, prostate, breast and ovarian cancers. Early studies imply that consuming fish oil everyday can help slow the progression of colon cancer in those with early stages of the disease and may even have the capacity to induce apoptosis (cell death) of cancer cells.

More can be written about the many fish oil benefits. And, as the science community and doctors continue to research omega-3s, you can be certain that fish oil will keep producing headlines as the ideal source of these essential fatty acids that are so vital to our bodies. Even if you’re already in great physical condition, a quality fish oil supplement is the fastest, safest way to realize and maintain optimal health!
