Can’t Go Home: Americans In Canada Share Health Care Stories
What do you think of when you imagine an American living in exile, unable to return home? This is a profile of two Americans living in Canada who can’t return to the US because they’re unable to get health insurance. Kathleen was also featured on CBCs “The Current”: www.cbc.ca

@cepoisonivy3karou Your an idiot. Did you watch the video at all? Socialized Health Care is in EVER industrialised nation in the world exept the US, and the US is ranked 37th in health care, behind every other industrialized nation in the world. You have an army, Police force, firemen, teachers, librariens, ect. right? All socialized programes dumass.
@BillSamsanov didn’t they say they moved to Canada with there husbands? so if there residents is in Canada that would make them eligible what’s misleading about that ? one husband is a citizen of Canada and the other husband went to school so i don’t think there’s nothing extremely misleading here.
This is extremely misleading. It gives the impression that just because you are in Canada does not mean you are eligible for serivices covered by medicare. Nothing could be further from the truth. You must be a Citizen or a Permanent Residents. You may be eligible for a temporary health card if you are a foreign worker or a foreign student. But, just like I stated above , you can just simply show up and all of sudden, be eligible to services covered under Medicare.
enjoying Canadian healthcare???? see my biggest deal with americans is that they dont think healthcare is a good idea, why? wahts ur evidnece its not like its a HUGE step towards communism plus its not, its called SOCAILISM
canadian health care should be made for canadians only or people of a foregin country who has lived in canada for more than 5 years…with papers saying their canadian….damn harpers making us soft….
why are these americans even living in canada if they’re just using our country for the healthcare? that little american boy’s bed could of been a bedroom to two canadian twin babies americans are a waste of space if they don’t believe canada is a great country seriously
People are smarter than this propaganda now…
@lasaludesunderecho Don’t to Europe! It’s a scum pit now as well!
@rbs651 the way it is in canada they make you pay for the ambulance if its not a critical imergency, and if you try to go to emergency room with sniffles they will turn you away, tell you to go see your family dr.
I have dual citizenship (blood/birth) but I currently live in the States. My family doctor is from Canada. The problem that is going to occur in the USA with the recently passed ‘free’ health care is that 1)The federal gov. will mismanage it and 2)it will be abused. We have HUGE amounts of ‘free-loaders’ / just plain LAZY people here now! Didn’t used to be that way but the ‘lame and lazy’ out number the good people here! They will go to the ER for ’sniffles’ and take an ambulance to get there!
@jawnbc you dont have to take the word exile literally
Stop complaining, if you don’t want to live in Canada, don’t! Stop mooching off our health care system.
I’m glad it’s borderline for some cus there’s no border in my opinion. A born and raised Canadian, I find it a disgusting slap in the face to the country which welcomed them with open arms.
I couldn’t agree more, wo is them to have to stay here in Canada. It’s like staying with a husband or wife cus you don’t want to get a job.. some would say they’re USING Canadian taxpayers, in fact most would. I can sympathize, I’ve been through the US healthcare system and lost a house, car etc because of it but I didn’t brag about using taxpayers on Youtube, what a slap in the face to Canadians. There are so many who were born here or weren’t but APPRECIATE Canada that could use the care.
How sickening it makes me as a Canadian taxpayer feel to know that you’re not here because you love the country or our culture or our people but the only reason is so that Canadian taxpayers can pay for your medical care but you’d rather be somewhere else, how proud that must make you feel to tell your friends you’re just using the Canadian system, you really don’t want to be here. I hope you both are able to return to America ASAP so that familys who actually WANT to be here can replace you.
why is it always some rare disease? I smell a progressive state of mind. She complains about the cost but wants everybody else to pay it.
Very thoughtful video! I worry for my friends in the States. More than once now I’ve had friends there who are working, middle class individuals but tell me they can’t afford to go see the doctor. One is in danger of losing his hearing and still can’t go! It’s really upsetting.
I really hope the U.S. comes to its senses and provides universal healthcare soon.
Tigress I believe they are thankful but just missing their families of origin at home in the States. They obviously know that Canada has provided care for them that they would not receive in their own country.
I live in England and have a 2 year old Daughter with a Kidney problem, at 3 Months she was taken into our N.H.S. Hospital by Paramedics and was in over 1 week, then again for a week for tests / treatment, she’s been on nightly Antibiotics for 22 months, and none of this has cost us a penny/Dime (her Birth didn’t either). It Maddens me when i see how US Media lies portraying Brit NHS as some kind of ‘filthy Commie’ system it is WAY superior to any in USA certanly for ordinary working folk.
My wife and I plan to move to Canada someday…the more research we do on the country, the people there…the government…we just really love the idea of moving there.
At this point, I don’t trust my government to change a light bulb more or less fix the economy, health-care, and other issues.
You are so right. America is a sinking ship! I’m actually making plans to move to Canada and apply for citizenship right now. Unfortunately it may take me four years to do so! I wish I could leave tonight!!!
@lasaludesunderecho
i agree. our healthcare system is a joke.. it sickens me.. we need change in america.
USA is going down the drain, I can’t wait to move to Europe or Canada. Sad but true.
@Stopandthinkforamin he was told he had to wait about a week but he wanted it asap so he went to the states the same day he spent over 100 thousand just because he wanted it then and there . most people can’t just spend that amount of money or even afford half of what he spent in a day
If we had free health care the US would really change. At first hard but in the end a new way to think
